The Producer – Pierre Gaillard

Pierre has devoted his entire life to wine.  At the age of 12 he was found ploughing his family vineyard with a horse.  Early in his career, Pierre spent time working for both Vidal Fleury and also Etienne Guigal.  At Guigal, he was instrumental in the creation of la Turque.  In 1985, Pierre decided to go out on his own.  His winery is located near the medieval village of Malleval (Condrieu/St Joseph). From here he manages 60 parcels spread across 35 hectares including the regions of Côte-Rôtie, St Joseph, Cornas and Condrieu in the Northern Rhône.

Terroir & Vinification

1 hectare plot of old syrah vines (70+ years). East facing vineyard with altered granite soils and gentle slope.  Hand-harvested, 100% destemmed, cooled pre-fermentation.  Vinified for 3-4 weeks, alcoholic fermentation at 35°C followed by post fermentation maceration at 30°C.  During maceration cap management consisted of both 3 times daily punchings and pump overs.  50% aged in new Allier & Nevers 228-litre fine grained French oak casks for 18 months.  Bottled unfiltered.

The Wine

Pierre’s 2019s show depth, poise and elegance with a distinctive note of black pepper running through his various incantations of Syrah.  The Cornas has a delicate nose of fresh blackberries, red cherries and roses contrasting with a bold and chewy palate of ripe brambles, leather, spices, and grippy tannins. Once more, a brush of acidity combines with a ferrous minerality to bring balance and freshness to the finish. Drink 2022-2035.
